The Mahabodhi temple at Bodhgaya is located on the spot where the Buddha attained enlightenment. The temple's principle relic is a distant descendant of the Bo tree under which the Buddha sat when his enlightenment took place. The site, having been sacred to Buddhists since the earliest days of the faith, is of unknown antiquity. Elements of the temple date from the 3rd century BC, but the present form of the temple is a reconstruction of a later form that would have been familiar to Hiuen Xsiang, the 7th centunry Chinese Buddhist pilgrim whose story is the basis of "The Monkey King" drama of literary reknown.

The unveiling and consecration of the Great Buddha Statue took place on November 18, 1989. The consecration ceremony was graced with the presence of His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, who blessed the 25-meter statue, the first great Buddha ever built in the history of India. The Statue is now a symbol of the holy place Bodhgaya, next to Mahabohdi Temple which is a World Heritage site, and enjoys constant visits of pilgrims from all over the world. Among local people, it is nicknamed "the 80-foot (25-meter) Buddha Statue."

The Thai monastery, built typically as per the Thai architecture, houses a Buddhist temple, which further contain images of the Lord Buddha in different forms. These images have also been carved with Buddhist scriptures, while at the same time the Buddhist symbols and other auspicious Buddhist objects can also be found in the monastic temples.

Royal Bhutan Monastery is one of the several monasteries in the Buddhist town of Bodh Gaya. The monastery featuring depictions of life of Lord Buddha attract millions of Buddhism followers from across the world. This monastery was constructed by the King of Bhutan as a tribute to Lord Buddha.The well-maintained pilgrim centre attracts tourists for its clay carvings depicting various aspects of Buddhism.

Bodhi Tree is located about 100 km from Patna. Buddha achieved enlightenment under this tree and hence it is a pilgrim center for Buddhists who hail from all parts of the world.
